Prayer and hope woven through art

This exhibition is a special showcase of highly spiritual works by four masters of Japanese painting: Higashiyama Kaii, Sugiyama Yasushi, Takayama Tatsuo, and Senju Hiroshi, a representative of contemporary Japanese painting.

Centered around "tranquility" and "nature," the works weave a worldview that resonates deep within the soul.

Highlights will include a special public viewing of the original paintings of Higashiyama Kaii's "Windy Beach" and Senju Hiroshi's "Waterfall."
In particular, Kaii Higashiyama’s “Wind-Swept Shore” is being exhibited to the public for the first time in half a century.

A total of 36 works will be on display, primarily by Higashiyama Kaii and Senju Hiroshi, but also including works by Sugiyama Yasushi and Takayama Tatsuo. This will be a rare opportunity to view these masterpieces, imbued with tranquility, up close.

Kaii Higashiyama

(1908 - 1999)
A representative landscape painter of postwar Japan. In his paintings of mountains, lakes, and roads, one finds quiet scenes imbued with prayer and hope. His signature “Higashiyama Blue” evokes the presence of pure air and water, offering a calming effect. Works such as “The Road” and “Green Echoes” reveal his contemplative gaze that reflects the inner heart through nature. Favoring sincerity over showiness, his paintings continue to inspire “quiet emotion” and “the courage to live.” He received the Order of Culture in 1969, and his serene aesthetic remains a pinnacle of Japanese-style painting.

His signature series, "Waterfalls," depicts majestic falling water, and is known for works that explore the essence of "time" and "life." In 1995, he became the first Asian to receive an Honorary Award at the Venice Biennale. As a professor at Kyoto University of the Arts, he is also dedicated to nurturing the next generation of artists, and is highly regarded both at home and abroad.

Yasushi Sugiyama

(1909 - 1993)
A Japanese-style painter and recipient of the Order of Culture. Known for his unique expression blending Eastern and Western aesthetics, his structured compositions convey intellect and elegance.
